What Is The Grading Scale?
Understanding your grades is key to tracking your progress and ensuring you meet the requirements for graduation. Whether you’re enrolled in our Standard, Honors, or Advanced Placement programs, keeping track of your grades will help you stay on course toward earning your diploma.
How Grades Are Determined at Excel High School
Excel High School uses a consistent grading scale across all programs to help students measure progress, understand expectations, and stay on track for graduation. Each letter grade reflects the level of mastery demonstrated through coursework. The chart below outlines how final grades are calculated based on percentage ranges and performance criteria.
Note: Note: For Advanced Placement (AP) or California A-G Approved courses, a grade of C (70%) or higher is required to pass. Grades of D or F in do not earn credit.
| Letter Grade | Percentage | |
|---|---|---|
| A | 90-100% | Student effectively demonstrated exceptional understanding of all course outcomes. All coursework was completed at a high level of quality and in a timely fashion. |
| B | 80-89.9% | Student effectively demonstrated solid understanding of all course outcomes. All coursework was completed at a solid level of quality and usually in a timely fashion. |
| C | 70-79.9% | Student demonstrated acceptable understanding of most course outcomes. All coursework was completed in a reasonably timely fashion. |
| D | 60-69.9% | Student demonstrated some understanding of the most critical course outcomes. All major coursework was completed. |
| F | Below 59% | Student has not demonstrated sufficient learning to earn credit for the course. Student work was consistently of poor quality. |
| P | 60-100% | Student achieved passing grades for the course. Holds no grade value but does indicate that the student has met the requirements necessary to pass the course. |
| IN | Incomplete | Major coursework left uncompleted. Final grade is withheld until sufficient coursework is complete and submitted. Temporary F assigned. |
| W | Withdrawn | Student officially withdraws from the class within one month after last engagement. Final F assigned two months after last engagement. |
Weighted GPA Policy at Excel High School
At Excel High School, we use a weighted Grade Point Average (GPA) system to recognize the increased difficulty of Honors and Advanced Placement (AP) courses.
- An A in a Standard course earns 4.0 GPA points
- An A in an Honors course earns 4.5 GPA points
- An A in an AP course earns 5.0 GPA points
This ensures that students who take on more rigorous coursework are fairly recognized during college admissions and scholarship evaluations.
Note: Excel High School does not offer course forgiveness. If a course is retaken, both the original and repeated grades appear on the transcript and are included in the cumulative GPA.
