Jessica Martin’s journey to earning her high school diploma is one of resilience, perseverance, and an unbreakable promise. For Jessica, completing high school wasn’t just a personal goal; it was a vow she made to someone who once gave her a home and a sense of belonging. Her story is a powerful example of how dedication, community support, and accessible education can transform lives, especially for adult learners facing unique challenges.
Jessica’s path was never easy. Growing up in foster care, she faced hardship after hardship, often feeling unwanted and uprooted. “I’ve been in two foster homes. I’ve been in Willow Crest. I’ve been told I was not wanted,” she shared, recounting a past filled with adversity. But one person made a lasting impact on her life: a woman who welcomed Jessica into her home and showed her kindness. Sadly, this woman passed away four years ago, but before she did, Jessica made a promise on her deathbed: she would finish her education and earn her high school diploma.
A Promise Fulfilled at 30
Jessica carried that promise with her for years, telling herself and her husband, Clinton, “I’ll be 30 years old by the time I get my high school diploma.” And, at 30, Jessica made good on that vow, thanks to the Gale Presents – Excel High School Program, a tuition-free initiative designed to help adults like her complete their high school education.
Finding Excel High School was a turning point. “I finally found this program that actually let me do it on my time,” Jessica explained. With a busy life, including work and raising three children, flexibility was essential. Jessica’s determination drove her to study in the early hours after midnight, sometimes working until 3 a.m. before going to bed, only to wake up in the afternoon, fit in more schoolwork, and start the cycle again. The structure of Excel High School’s program allowed her to keep this rigorous schedule while managing her other responsibilities.
The Support of Family and Community
Throughout her journey, Jessica’s husband, Clinton, stood by her side, marveling at her strength and determination. “I mean, this supermom right here, that’s her title, Supermom,” Clinton said, describing the sacrifices Jessica made to keep her promise and complete her education. Her story inspired not only her family but also her community in Ottawa County. Jessica’s achievements were celebrated by the Miami Public Library, which awarded scholarships to her and nine other residents to participate in the statewide program, opening doors for adults who thought they had missed their chance at education.
Jessica’s success also resonated with Miami City Manager Bo Reese, who praised her dedication. “This little girl set out on this path many years ago, and she was dedicated to getting it done. And she did it,” he said, highlighting Jessica’s accomplishment as a point of pride for the entire community.
A Bright Future Ahead
Jessica’s success doesn’t end with her diploma. She has already enrolled in further education, preparing to continue her journey this fall. By earning her high school diploma, Jessica has set a powerful example for her children, showing them that determination and hard work can overcome even the most difficult circumstances. Her story is a beacon of hope for other adult learners who may feel that time or circumstances have set them back too far.
